Mirissa, a tiny village on Sri Lanka’s south coast, is said to be the closest location to the blue whale gathering spot. Other creatures that may be seen offshore include Bryde’s whales, sperm whales, killer whales, pilot whales, and four different species of dolphins: spinner, bottlenose, striped, and Risso’s dolphins. For those seeking additional activities, there are water sports facilities including boating, fishing, sea kayaking, river tours, coastal cruises, sailing, and snorkeling.
Although the weather is always pleasant, December through February is the ideal time of year to visit Mirissa.
