Polonnaruwa
One of the most important kingdoms in the history of the country, Polonnaruwa is a pillar of the cultural triangle. Its dispersed remains, which date back to the 11th and 12th centuries AD, are still in good condition. The enormous statue of Sri Parakramabahu, the greatest monarch of Polonnaruwa, and the enormous reservoir he constructed in the 12th century, known as the “Sea of Parakrama,” remain majestic.
Must-see sights include the Buddha sculptures carved out of rock at the Gal Vihara complex, the Lankatilaka shrine, the King’s Council Chamber, the Lotus Bath, and the Menik Vihara, Rankot Vihara, Alahana Pirivena, and Jetavana monasteries.
