Wilpattu
Wilpattu is a lake complex that spans more than 131,000 hectares from the North Western coast to the North Central province. It is encircled by scrub jungle and grassy plains. Wilpattu is one of Sri Lanka’s oldest national parks, having been designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1905. Leopards are the major draw, but there are also plenty of common and uncommon species, such as elephants, sloth bears, buffaloes, and crocs.
Wilpattu and the surrounding area are also very important historically. According to history, Prince Vijaya came from East India in 543 BC and established the country of Lanka.
