This World Heritage Site, a massive rock that rises 370 meters above the surrounding level terrain, was once the unassailable stronghold of King Kassapa, who ruled in the fifth century BC. Unmatched works of art, architecture, and engineering that have endured for thousands of years include the sprawling ruins of the city at the top, the mirror wall of scrawled verses, the acres of manicured gardens, the enormous lion paws securing the fortress entrance, and the frescoes painted on the sheer rock face.
There are plenty of additional tourist sites for anyone who choose to venture outside of Sigiriya.
